It’s a lovely, quiet day in a small southern town when a strange man demanding to see the pastor of the church accosts two sisters leaving the church. Although terrified, the women manage to flee to safety. Shots are fired, the police arrive, and the man is injured and captured however he did not discontinue the hunt for the pastor!.
In custody and in the hospital, the gunman admits to being hired to kill Matt, the pastor, but refuses to name his boss. Escaping from the hospital, the man disappears and a family, a congregation and the town are frightened, but puzzled as to why they are in danger.
Forty years earlier, Matt and Shelby had had a brief affair. Matt knew that a child had been born to Shelby out of that affair, given up for adoption at her husband’s insistence. Both had gone on with their lives, Shelby married to an abusive husband, suffered greatly for her sins. Matt gave his life to the Lord and went into the ministry. He married, but lost his wife to cancer after years of a loving but childless marriage. When the daughter that Shelby had given up, and Matt never knew about, located her birth parents, she found they were living in the same small town and were part of the same church. Jennifer was overjoyed to finally meet her biological parents and find that she had a half-sister.
Matt and Shelby, now both widowed, found each other drawn to as they had been years ago. Nevertheless, they also decided to confess their prior relationship before his congregation and ask forgiveness. Unfortunately, their fellow believers were not so forgiving and Matt is losing his position as pastor. Now someone has decided that Matt must pay a further penalty, with his life.
Shelby’s brother-in-law returns to town and pushes himself into her life with the intention of causing problems. Abusive and mean, he scares Shelby. She thinks he could be the man behind the gunman. After his arrival, the threats increase and reach out to other family members. Tensions from the adjustments and changes in relationships, as well as little jealousies, tempt the family and tear at their faith.
As the threats escalate, and the authorities seem to be making no progress in finding out who is behind them, the daughters decide to protect their parents by sending them away –on a cruise. While careful to abide by the values of their faith (separate staterooms, of course), Matt and Shelby find their attraction to each other growing steadily in the atmosphere of the sea. In the magical ambience of the cruise, the two have time to concentrate on each other. Romance blooms stronger. Matt proposes and they experience a marvelous whirlwind wedding on the ship. However, not all is perfect, for the murderer has managed to send threats even across the sea.
Back home, the couple faces even more trials. There is dissension in Matt’s congregation as he tries to hold on until they find a replacement for him. The church’s head deacon is fighting Matt at every turn and may be hiding secrets of his own. A relative of Shelby’s, Deacon Raymond, disliked Matt immensely for his previous affair with his cousin and he was skimming money from the treasury to fund his own agenda. Deacon Raymond cannot stand the notoriety surrounding his church and plots to have Pastor taken out.
Finally desperate for answers and with all the suspects still roaming freely, the authorities and the family join to plot a trap. In a series of vignettes, we see them drop hints all over the town, hoping to attract the one true villain out of the many suspects in the case. Unfortunately, the trap does not go exactly as planned and in a gripping confrontation, the deacon is shot and killed, but not before, he shoots the pastor.
Fortunately, Matt recovers and while he is recuperating, his congregation finds the forgiveness they had not felt before. The story ends with a second wedding that includes the entire family and promises a future of refreshed, fo

I like who done it books and this one even more because of it's Chrstian theme. Good and Evil will always be with us until the Lord returns to rule and we Christian's will continue to be tormented as the author vividly expresses in her book. I like the way she show 's her characters growing in maturity and self confidence by being loved and respected by a man who truly has loved her for 40 years. I rate this book a 5. Good character's and the power of prayer is why I enjoy Lajoyce 's books.Product details
